The monument to Giordano Bruno is a bronze sculpture located in Rome's Campo de' Fiori, on the spot where the philosopher was sentenced by the Holy Office to death at the stake on 17 February 1600.
The statue was made by Ettore Ferrari and unveiled on 9 June 1889. At the time, the location of the monument was strongly criticized by ecclesiastical authorities and became a symbol of free thought and a challenge to the Church and the Pope.
From the Gospel of John (Jn 1:47-51)
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”
Nathanael's experience is personal and unique but has common and paradigmatic traits in which every believer can find themselves: the restlessness that drives him to search; a credible witness who shows us the way; doubt (“how do you know me?”) that he is on the right path; a reinterpretation of one's life under God's gaze; astonishment and joy.
But this is only the beginning: the Lord promises us to continue to act in our lives in a unique and special way. We perhaps too often fail to notice it, let our doubts overshadow our certainties and weaken the light of our faith.
In what do I recognize God’s action in my life? Which encounters fuel my certainties? And what my doubts?
Write down what fuels your doubts on a piece of paper and put them all together in a hat; each member of the group picks one up (not his/hers) and puts it in their pocket as a symbol of taking on the difficulties of others: challenging situations, faced together, seem less impossible to overcome.
