In 2011, on the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the Wall of the Constitution of the Roman Republic of 1849 was unveiled on the Belvedere of the Gianicolo promenade near Villa Lante.
It is one of the most important texts of the Italian Risorgimento, narrated along the belvedere wall for over 50 meters in length.
With its sixty-nine articles it constitutes one of the sources that inspired the Constitution of the Italian Republic, a constitution open to instances of justice and progress in a period such as the Italian Risorgimento.
From the book of Deuteronomy (Dt 6:4-9)
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord;[a] 5 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. 6 And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
“...And so you understand from this that our constitution is partly a reality, but only partly a reality. In part it is still a program, an ideal, a hope, a commitment of work to be done. How much work you have to accomplish! How much work lies before you!”
(P. Calamandrei - speech on the Constitution 1955)
The constituent fathers handed us a mandate, a program, an ideal, a commitment to be carried out every day.
What am I really willing to commit myself to?
What values do I intend to witness to?
Look around and find a stone on which to write what your commitment is today.
Then leave your stone on the constitution wall.
If you want you can share your commitment with the community.
In light of what has been read, experienced, reflected upon, shared... insert words here that summarize the experience.
