The church of San Giorgio in Velabro is a Catholic place of worship in the historic center of Rome, located in the Ripa district on Via del Velabro.
The church, the result of a 9th-century enlargement of an earlier diaconal building and later remodeled several times, stands near the so-called Arch of Janus and is a rectory entrusted to the Order of the Holy Cross.
During the years when scouting was banned by the fascist regime, the long years of the silent jungle, The church of San Giorgio in Velabro became one of the symbolic places for scouts. Here former leaders and scouts of Rome, at the initiative of Salvatore Salvatori, Local Commissioner before the dissolution of the scout movement in Italy, “kept their flames burning,” and continued to meet clandestinely every year on April 23, to renew their promise.
From the First Letter of Saint Peter (1Pt 5:6-10)
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. 7 Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. 8 Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, and strengthen you.
Sometimes life challenges us with greater or lesser difficulties, with loss and pain, but our faith in the living God and the hope of eternal life give us the drive and strength to stand firmly against these shocks.
Are there difficulties that have caused your willpower to waver or fall?
How have you resisted, if at all?
Find a companion, place your hands behind your companion's shoulders and lift one foot while remaining anchored on the ground with only one foot.
(The Lord answered: "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you, never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.")
Then resist in this position by telling of times when you succeeded or failed in resisting difficulties.
